Masks - Salmon Prince Moon by Roger Gray c1998
This mask was based on a Tsimshian Legend called, “The Salmon Prince”. The Prince was given a clear stone to help him resist the temptations of other women. He had to hold this stone between his lips in order for it to protect him from the advances of other women. The top of the mask depicting the Prince climbing out of the Salmon’s skin. They both share the same tongue to symbolize that they share the same spirit.
This is an earlier piece done by Roger that has come from a collection.
Carved from one piece of Red Cedar with all the detail lines fully carved the two salmon wrapped around the face the tears of the Prince are also salmon. This is a great example of Rogers attention to detail and his dedication to his work and culture.
This mask measures 24 inches in height by 22 inches wide and 9 1/2 inches deep.
