Bowl - Loon bowl with Baby by Henry Speck C2007
Among the Kwakwaka’wakw, Loon is associated with Kumugwe’ chief of the undersea world. Loon is often shown sitting on the head of the Kumugwe’ in reference to the story of Loon landing on the chief, who is so large that the loon mistook him for an island.
Carved from red cedar with 10 abalone inlay the baby is the lid to the bowl and both heads turn. the piece measures 20 inches in length by 7 inches wide and 8 inches high, the baby is 71/2 inches in length by 2 3/4 inches wide and 3 inches high.
