Inlayed Box - Killer Whale Box by Mark Nelson C2010
Carved from Gabon Ebony Gabon Ebony is the benchmark for black in lumber. A very dense wood it is usually only available in widths less than 6” and lengths less than 48”. This is partly to do with where the trees grow in central West Africa. Excellent for carving and is One of the purest black woods. Some other names it goes by are African Ebony, Cameroon Ebony, Kribi Ebony, Madagascar Ebony.
With Ivory inlay from Mammoth (It was generally assumed the last Woolly Mammoths vanished around 10,000 years ago, there tusk have been found up to 11 feet in length. Trade in the ivory from the tusks of dead Mammoth has occurred for 300 years and continues to be legal. Mammoth ivory is very rare and costly.)
This one of a kind box with the Killer Whale or Orca carved into the lid with 6 Mammoth ivory inlays in it along with a ivory handle would be the perfect gift for the person who has everything.
